Mazafati dates, a variety of dates produced in Iran, originate from Bam in Kerman province, hence often called “Bam dates.” These dates have an oval shape with a soft, juicy texture and a dark red-purple to black color. They feature a smooth, thin skin that easily separates from the flesh, classifying them as moist dates. Their moisture content when fresh ranges from 12% to 25%, which requires them to be refrigerated at temperatures between 5°C for optimal preservation of up to one year. Unlike some other varieties, Mazafati dates have a pit that easily detaches from the flesh.
Mazafati dates are particularly popular among Iranians and are rich in potassium, which helps compensate for potassium deficiency and reduces the risk of stroke. They also contain minerals like magnesium, which strengthens bones and reduces diabetes risk. Additionally, with their high natural sugar content, Mazafati dates quickly restore lost energy, helping people tolerate hunger longer. For this reason, they are recommended for those with high daily activity levels.
